As the Director of Orchestras at Maury High School since 1997,
Mr. Featherer continues the tradition of musical excellence
that has propelled the Maury Orchestras since 1911.
In 1997 Mr. Featherer received his Bachelor's of Music Education
degree from East Carolina University with high honors, and a
Master's of Education from Regent University in 2000. Mr. Featherer
studied viola performance with Fritz Gearhart and conducting
with Robert Hause, Scott Carter, Steven Blackwelder and was
also chosen to participate in master classes with JoAnne Falletta,
conductor of the Virginia Symphony and G. Zimmerman, conductor
of the North Carolina Symphony.
Mr. Featherer has served as guest conductor in several All-City
Orchestras including those in Newport News, Chesapeake, Richmond,
Virginia Beach and in Fayetteville and Southern Pines, North
Carolina.
As an avid violist, Mr. Featherer has performed with several
symphonies including the North Carolina Symphony, Wilmington
Symphony, and the Tar River Symphony. Most recently Mr. Featherer
held the principal violist position with the Virginia Beach
Symphony.
While at Maury High School, Mr. Featherer has led the orchestras
to several Music Festivals Grand National Championships (1998,
2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007) and has toured up and down the
east coast, including New York, Toronto, Orlando, the Caribbean,
Europe, Mexico, Los Angeles, Belize City and Honolulu, Hawaii.
Believing that all students should receive a well-balanced
education, Mr. Featherer continues to lobby for Music Education
and its importance in the core-curriculum.
